Resolution congratulates Japan’s new emperor

Sen. Paul A. Manglona (Ind-Rota) has introduced a Senate joint resolution that congratulates the ascension of Emperor Naruhito of Japan to the Chrysanthemum Throne.

Naruhito’s reign officially began on May 1.

Naruhito became Japan’s 126th monarch, after his father, the 85-year-old former Emperor Akihito, abdicated last April 30 due to old age and declining health.

Akihito, now referred to as emperor emeritus, reigned for 30 years and became the first reigning monarch to abdicate the throne in over 200 years.

The ascension of Naruhito, Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko’s eldest son, to the throne began the Reiwa era from his father’s Heisei.

Naruhito is married to now Empress Masako; they have a daughter, 17-year-old Princess Toshi.

Akihito and his wife, Michiko, visited Saipan in June 2005 to pay tribute to those who perished in the CNMI during World War II.

The visit coincided with the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
