Brilliant Star shines
Brilliant Star School clinched the overall title in the girls elementary division of the 2019 Public School System/McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships.
Brilliant Star scored 153 points to beat perennial winner Koblerville Elementary School (125), Saipan International School (125), Tinian Elementary School (87), and Agape Christian School. Points were awarded to schools based on how their students finished in the U7, U9, and U11 age groups’ 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m races, long jump, and softball throw events held last Friday and Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex.
A sweep of the first place honors in the running events in the U11 division was the deciding factor in Brilliant Star’s overall title conquest in the girls elementary division.
Savita Sikkel handed Brilliant Star three gold medals after prevailing in the 100, 400m, and 800m runs, while Fiona Rogan won two golds with her victory in the 60m and 1,500m races. Irin Chung completed Brilliant Star’s domination in the running events after getting the gold in the 200m race.
Chung also finished third in the 60m and 400m, while Sikkel was the runner-up in the 1,500m, and Regan came in at second in the long jump, which Koblerville’s Elizabeth Chipwelong ruled.
In the softball throw, SIS’ Phoenix Gross took the gold medal, while Agape’s Maru Fu and Saipan Community School’s Katrina Wu bagged the silver and bronze, respectively.
In the girls U9 competition, Brilliant Star got a gold from Sari Barman, who toipped the 800m run. William S. Reyes’ Erica Narruhn earned the silver, while Agape’s Angeline Quan brought home the bronze.
In other results in the U9 division, Tinian’s Ysabelle Lenteja notched the gold in the 60m run, while Koblerville’s Elizha Maratita and Kagman’s Aaliyah Cosmes also made it to the podium. Lenteja bagged three more gold medals after winning the 100m and 200m races and the softball throw.
In the 400m run, the gold medal went to Koblerville’s Jellydia Hong, while Barman and Tinian’s Karrena Shrestha were awarded the silver and bronze, respectively. In the 1,500m run, Quan edged out two WSR runners—Yilu Wang and Jewell Saluta—for the gold medal.
In the long jump, Kagman got a gold medal off Paige Bianco’s first place finish, while Hong settled for the silver, and Barman pocketed the bronze.
Meanwhile, the Top 5 overall finishers in the boys elementary division along with the results in the boys U9 and U11 events will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Thursday edition.
