CNMI cadets triumph at national drill meet

Cadets from Saipan Southern, Tinian, and Rota high schools arrived yesterday from California with a boat- load of trophies that they won at a national drill meet last April 27.
According to Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps instructor Richard Basa, JROTC cadets are sharing with the CNMI the many awards and trophies they won at the 2019 Golden Bear West Coast National Drill Meet at the North High School in Torrance, California.
Basa said the cadets of Saipan Southern High School, Rota High School, and Tinian High School won the Overall Army Traveling Trophy. The CNMI Multiple School Unit JROTC also received the Overall Army Golden Bear Championship Trophy.
He credited the wins to what he said was rigorous and countless hours of training.
He said that Saipan Southern High School competed in Armed Inspection Varsity, Armed Regulation Varsity, Armed Exhibition Varsity, and Varsity Color Guard. They also competed in Armed Fourman, duo and solo as well as Unarmed Fourman and duo.
JROTC is a high school program focusing on honing the military skills of students with the hope to improve their leadership traits, camaraderie and to motivate them to become better members of the community.
The CNMI MSU Brigade has been winning since 2012, Basa said.
“The trophies won are an embodiment of the confidence, leadership, self-discipline, and teamwork that the CNMI PSS seeks to instill in its cadets. …This is not the first time that the three schools won in the JROTC event. …Kagman High School won in the Unarmed Novice Division in the past,” Basa said.
“The accomplishments evidently display that our schools are exceptionally skilled in performing drill despite coming from small islands,” Basa added.
