Submarine 15 sailors join Inarajan cleanup
INARAJAN, Guam—Sailors assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 15 partnered with the command’s sister village of Inarajan during a cleanup last April 26.
The collaborative cleanup effort, which was inspired by Earth Day, was an opportunity for the sailors to engage with the residents of Inarajan and foster relationships between the military and local community.
“I think it’s very important that we work together as a team to keep our island beautiful,” said Inarajan Mayor Doris Lujan. “The military always comes with their assistance and we really appreciate all the efforts they provide for us.”
There were more than 40 volunteers whose efforts produced 50 bags of trash and multiple larger items such as tires, pieces of metal, branches, and stone benches. Sailors and community members picked up trash along the coastal line, roadways and near the Inarajan natural swimming pool.
“The cleanup was a wonderful experience,” said Legalman 1st Class Stacy Oglesby, a volunteer from CSS-15. “Our squadron came together with our sister village to do our part in celebrating Earth Day. It was a great opportunity, and I loved working side by side with the community of Inarajan.”
The mayor’s office provided refreshments for volunteers and extended an invitation for the squadron to attend the community’s upcoming coconut festival.
“On behalf of the community of Inarajan and the mayor’s office and staff, I would like to say thank you for helping our village and celebrating Earth Day with us,” said Lujan. “This is really great for the community and the partnership we have with the submarine squadron.”
CSS-15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Piti, Guam, and consists of four Los Angeles-class attack submarines. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable and USS Emory S. Land. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements. (Submarine Squadron 15)
