Barrett named 2019 Businesswoman of the Year

TUMON, Guam—Jessica M. Barrett, president, Barrett Enterprises Inc., which does business as Barrett Plumbing, was named the 2019 Guam Business Magazine Businesswoman of the Year and presented with the annual award at the Businesswoman of the Year gala on April 27 at the Hyatt Regency Guam.

Barrett was selected from eight nominees in this year’s program, which recognizes businesswomen who have made significant contributions to their industries and have demonstrated a strong commitment to their community. Her photo is featured on the cover of Guam Business Magazine’s May-June issue, which was released at the gala.

Barrett has worked alongside her father in the family plumbing business for as long as she can remember, officially joining the company as office manager in 1998. In 2003, she became the president of Barrett Plumbing, in addition to being the first certified female plumber on Guam.

She was born on Guam and holds a 1995 bachelor’s in business management from the University of Guam. Since, she has gone on to receive certification in Water Treatment Plant Operator Level 1, the 2008 Certificate of Apprenticeship as Plumber from U.S. Department of Labor, the 2013 National Center for Construction Education certificate in Research Project Management, the 2017 OSH Solutions Foundations for Safety Leadership certificate, the 2018 Babson College 10KSB Certificate and the 2019 RME for Barrett Enterprises Inc.

Barrett served as president of the National Association of Women in Construction from 2015 to 2016, chairwoman of NAWICs Beers, Boys & Toys event in 2016 and as a board member and member of the Membership Committee and Scholarship Committee for the Guam Contractor’s Association from 2016 to 2019. She is the vice chairwoman and incoming president of GCA, where she also serves as vice chairwoman of the Small Business Committee.

Proceeds from the gala will fund scholarships for students pursuing business and related degrees at the University of Guam, Guam Community College and Northern Marianas College.

Rhodes, president, Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association and President, MARQ Consulting Services (2012); Joyce Quinata Crisostomo, executive director, Cars Plus and President, Payless Car Rental (2011); Anna Wang Kao, founder and president, Genghis Khan Furniture Co. (2010); Lorraine S. Okada, president and owner, Managing Consulting Services (2009); Julienne Rose Perez Duenas, physical therapist, owner and clinical director, Sports, Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation Inc. (2008); Christine Won Pat Baleto, store owner and franchisee, Market Wholesale Distributors (2007); and Katherine C. Calvo, executive vice president and chairwoman of the board, Pay-Less Markets Inc. (2006).
