Suspected burglar rearranges security camera, unaware of a second camera
An alleged burglar was identified after he rearranged the surveillance camera at the apartment he was burglarizing on Sunday, not knowing the existence of a second hidden camera.
Kehek Bunusek, 43, was arrested Monday in Garapan for burglary and theft. His bail was set at $2,000 cash.
According to police, the victim had left her apartment at 8am that day and returned at 9:20am, to find her window screen already damaged and her red Gateway laptop and Samsung Note 3 cell phone, all worth $1,050, missing.
Upon reviewing the video footage of a security camera located in the landlord’s room, police officer Jason Tarkong identified the suspect as Bunusek, having dealt with Bunusek several times in the past.
According to police detective Patrick I. George in his report, the video clearly shows Bunusek peeking into the victim’s window, walking toward the video camera, and disappearing beneath it. The suspect used a ceramic toilet tank as a stepping base to stand on under the first video camera. He then repositioned the camera so it would focus on a different angle and away from the hallway.
The second camera placed in a different location caught Bunusek walking toward the victim’s window.
George said he interviewed Bunusek on Monday at the Commonwealth Bureau of Investigation where the suspect admitted burglarizing the apartment and stealing a laptop and cell phone.
George said that Bunusek claimed he sold the laptop for $75 to a store cashier and the cell phone for $100 to a couple.
