DPS: Almost all motorists use seatbelts

The Department of Public Safety reported yesterday at a proclamation signing at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe that almost all motorists in the CNMI highways now use seatbelts.
DPS noted during yesterday’s Click it or Ticket enforcement mobilization campaign proclamation signing that 89.28 percent of all motorists traveling on CNMI highways use their seatbelts, based on a 2018 survey.
“For everyone… please take the time to [use] seatbelts,” said Gov. Ralph DLG Torres after signing the proclamation.
Statistics from the proclamation noted that an estimated 14,955 lives of occupants aged 5 and older nationwide were saved by seatbelts in 2017.
“Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to reduce fatalities in minor vehicle crashes,” the proclamation noted.
Starting from May 20, 2019, through June 2, 2019, the Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization campaign will be activated in the CNMI. Law enforcers will ensure that all motor vehicle occupants are buckled up both day and night to reduce the risks of injury and death caused by traffic crashes.
“Increased enforcement of seatbelt law coupled with publicity, has proven to be an effective method to increase seatbelt use rates and decrease fatal crashes,” the proclamation stated.
