The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence is inviting the public to take part in the proclamation signing ceremony to declare April 2019 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10am at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

The CNMI has been recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month since 2008 with annual campaigns that aim to raise public awareness on the issue and empower community members to engage in prevention throughout the year.

“Sexual Assault Awareness Month or SAAM is also about giving hope and support to victims and survivors, which is something we all can do that makes a difference,” said Kiki I. Benjamin, NMCADSV program manager.

“Another thing we can do to influence others to prevent sexual violence is to practice consent in our daily lives which is so important and the foundation for this year’s SAAM theme of ‘I Ask,’” added Benjamin.

Benjamin also invites community members to take part in the SAAM events and activities scheduled throughout April including the Walk & Rolls Against Sexual Violence with the first one on Wednesday, April 10, starting at the Kagman High School campus, and on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, starting at the San Roque Elementary School campus. Both events will start at 5pm.

Next, the highly anticipated S.A.F.E. Jamboree will be on Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 11am to 4pm at the Garapan Central Park. The event will feature activity centers including a bounce house and different types of arts and crafts. There will also be exhibits, music and dance performances, and raffle prizes for participants.

Note that more details on events and activities for Tinian and Rota will be shared and announced shortly.

In addition, tune in every Tuesday morning on KKMP on 92.1 FM starting on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, to hear from professionals and community members talk about various topics related to SAAM.

For more information related to SAAM, contact NMCADSV at (670) 234-3878 or email info@endviolencenmi.org. If you or anyone you know is experiencing sexual violence or abuse, contact 911 for emergency assistance or the 24-Hour Victim Hotline at (670) 234-5100. (PR)
