April 7 deadline to remove campaign materials

The Commonwealth Election Commission is reminding all candidates in the March 23 special election that they have until April 7 to remove all campaign materials from public places.

CEC executive director Julita Villagomez said yesterday that candidates and their supporters should start taking down their campaign materials.

She added, though, that the rule on taking down campaign posters applies only to those on public lands.

According to the Election Reform of 2000 law, each candidate who fails to remove campaign posters within the deadline may be fined $500.

Most campaign signs have been taken down already.

Villagomez said that May 12 is the deadline for the candidates’ submission of campaign financial statement.

Marco Taisakan Peter of the Republican Party won the special election by a landslide in a four-way race for Precinct 3’s vacant seat in the House of Representatives.

Former representative Donald Cabrera Barcinas of the Democratic Party came second. Independents David Castro Sablan and Mariano Deleon Guerrero Fajardo landed third and fourth, respectively.

The special election was held following the death of representative Francisco D. Dela Cruz last January.
