The Department of Public Safety recovered ancient human remains in the village of San Antonio last Monday.

On Monday, DPS received a call regarding remains uncovered in San Antonio Village, specifically Hakmang Avenue.

Proper procedure was followed, photographs of the scene were taken, and the evidence was then sent to Historic Preservation Office archeologist Luk Simmonds who later determined that the bones discovered were of ancient human remains.

According to a press release from DPS, police detectives responded to the call at around 12:18pm regarding the remains in San Antonio.

Upon arrival at the scene, the detectives met with the witness who discovered what appeared to be human remains.

Upon further observation detectives noticed that the bones were attached to roots of a fallen tree along Hakmang Avenue.

Crime scene technicians along with HPO specialists arrived shortly after and assessed the remains.

The remains were later sent out to Simmonds for testing and was determined to be ancient human remains.

DPS wants to remind the public to refrain from handling, marking, or moving any remains, surrounding soil, or foreign debris around an area where human remains are discovered and to report any discovery of human remains to 911 immediately.
