NMC gets a new training bed
The Northern Marianas College received a hospital training bed last week for the college’s nursing program.
Interim NMC president Frankie Eliptico said the new patient bed was a donation from the Marianas Visiting Nurses to assist in their nursing program.
“Our nursing students can use this as part of their training,” Eliptico said in an interview, adding that the nurses could use the bed for simulation training.
“Part of the work that is involved in our nursing program is a lot of hands-on activities and curriculum, so the patient bed really allows our students to gain actual experience with equipment that they will see in hospitals and clinics,” he added.
Currently, this is the only patient bed that NMC has, according to Eliptico. Many of the program’s equipment were destroyed by Super Typhoon Yutu in late October 2018.
“However, as part of our training, the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. allows our students as part of the nursing program to participate in clinical studies…where they work alongside hospital staff that are registered nurses in the hospital,” he said.
Eliptico noted that the college’s temporary nursing classrooms will only be able to fit one bed. NMC sustained extensive typhoon damage throughout its As Terlaje campus. Classes are being held right now in temporary tents installed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“We are of course working to replenish our nursing equipment and the laboratory, which was damaged by the typhoon,” Eliptico said.
The donation, according to Eliptico, was made possible through talks between NMC Nursing chair Rosa Tudela and the leadership of the Marianas Visiting Nurses.
“We are very appreciative of the donation,” he added.
