Jury trial set for alleged sex offender
A jury trial has been set for a man who allegedly molested a minor on the island of Rota.
Lazaro H. Guillermo, 25, is set to face jury trial on July 8, 2019. Guillermo is accused of entering a home on Rota and molesting a then-17-year-old girl. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for June 20 at 1:30pm
However, Guillermo’s lawyer, Janet King, told the court that the Office of the Attorney General has offered Guillermo a plea deal.
Naraja said if Guillermo decides to accept the plea offer, a status conference will be held on April 8 at 9:30am.
Guillermo is facing charges of burglary, sexual assault in the second degree, and disturbing the peace. He remains in custody of the Department of Corrections.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, the Rota Department of Public Safety received a call about a sexual assault of a minor in Sinapalo back in June 2018.
Police learned that the victim, a 17-year-old girl, was an off-island guest of a family over the weekend.
Investigation revealed that the alleged perpetrator, Guillermo, is a friend of the family but does not stay in that house.
Guillermo was arrested that same morning at a nearby house.
The victim told police that she woke up to someone touching her privates in the early morning of Sunday as she was sleeping on a couch in a bedroom with another female on a bed with a baby.
The victim allegedly recognized Guillermo but she did not scream for help, afraid that he might hurt her and the two others in the room. It was only when Guillermo left the bedroom that the victim told the other woman in the room about what had happened.
The other female told police that she actually saw Guillermo enter the room and touch the victim’s privates but that she was also scared to say anything as the suspect may hurt her.
During the police interview, Guillermo allegedly admitted breaking into the house through the window and touching the girl.
Guillermo said he left the bedroom when the witness told him to leave.
Based on DPS records, Guillermo is a tier-1 sex offender in Guam.
Guillermo reports to DPS Rota once a year about where he lives.
