Street Market resumes tomorrow
The weekly mini-festival that is more popularly known as the Thursday Night Market at the Garapan Fishing Base would resume tomorrow after being temporarily sidelined when essential electric components were blown away and damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu in late October 2018.
CNMI Arts Council executive director Parker Yobei affirmed the resumption of the weekly operation of the night market with Saipan Tribune yesterday.
“We are good to go this week,” he said, adding that his office had already met with regular vendors.
Yobei had noted in an interview in mid-February that they expect the resumption of the street market in mid-March 2019 at least.
Do not expect anything fancy to mark the event’s resumption. The re-opening the mini-festival was the main priority, according to Yobei.
He did not rule out the possibility, though, of having a special celebration in the future to highlight the re-opening of the street market.
For the moment, the street market would re-open with a total of 35 vendors—25 food vendors and 10 non-food vendors.
“They are very eager to open again and they missed the street market on Thursday,” he added.
Yobei said his office made sure that vendor permits are up-to-date before allowing them to participate in the weekly event.
“We are redoing our registration to make sure everybody’s requirements are complete, such as their business licenses, sanitation permits, etc. As long as they are up-to-date, they may participate in the street market,” he said.
The weekly street market had not been open since the destruction of Super Typhoon Yutu across southern Saipan and Tinian in late October 2018. Electrical components such as two weather heads, 12 panel boxes with eight outlets each, two meter boxes, and more equipment were blown away during the typhoon.
