A book highlighting the plants and animals of the CNMI was recently published to educate residents and visitors alike.
Common Flora and Fauna of the Mariana Islands mid-February 2019 was published by Mariana Islands Books to update the 2004 version of the same title by Scott Vogt, a biologist with experience in the Marianas, and Laura L. Williams. The two also authored the 2004 version of the book.
As of publication, the updated 2019 version is not being sold yet in the CNMI; it is, however, available at the University of Guam bookstore.
“The National Park bookstores on Saipan and Guam will be selling [the book],” said Naoko Vogt in an email to Saipan Tribune. “They told us it will probably be between $22 and $24.”
Saipan Tribune verified yesterday that the American Memorial Park bookstore had over 200 copies of the 2004 version of the book and would be selling the updated version once all older versions are sold out. The bookstore representative added that they helped the Public School System secure 300 copies of the new 2019 version.
“Our main goal is to give residents and visitors a guide [to] the animals and trees they are most likely to see when out on a hike or near their house or hotel,” Vogt said in an email. “There are no other guides like this for the Marianas and most people have an interest in nature, so with this book, they can identify what they see and learn something about it.”
The book consists of 164 pages that include pictures and descriptions of the common flora and fauna, or plants and animals, in the Mariana Islands and was first released on Feb. 10, 2019.
