Saipan Southern High School rallied past Mount Carmel School 1, 54-48, during the boys division game in the 2018-2019 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association Varsity Basketball League yesterday at Koblerville Gymnasium.
The Manta Rays were behind at halftime, 23-29, but managed to regroup in the second half to overtake the Knights and steal the win.
After securing the come-from-behind victory, Saipan Southern kept the division’s best record and remained undefeated with its 4-0 mark. Mt. Carmel, on the other hand, absorbed its second loss in five games and is now tied with Agape Christian School 1 for third place behind idle Kagman High School (3-1)
Agape 1 notched its third win after showing no mercy to sister team Agape 2, 127-30.
Kobe Yang extended his streak of firing 20-plus points to three games, as he finished with 26 markers to lead all scorers in the match played at the Torchbearers court in Gualo Rai. Silas Xu and Jonathan Xiong also did damage for Agape 1, as they netted 21 points apiece in the easy win.
With another lopsided loss, Agape 2 has yet to enter the win column after five games.
In other results, Saipan International School defeated Grace Christian Academy at the Eagles’ court in Navy Hill, 56-40.
Geckos co-captains A.J. Hudkins and Kuu Nishimura teamed up in handing SIS the double-digit winning margin after scoring 19 and 13 points, respectively. The Eagles drew 13 from Ryan Choi and 10 from Steven Balakrishna, but these were not enough, as GCA failed to overcome SIS’ team play.
The Geckos improved their record to 2-2, bouncing back from a tough loss to MCS 1, while the Eagles fell to a 2-3 card.
Meanwhile, GCA takes on MCS 1 today at 4:30pm at the Koblerville Gymnasium, while at 3:30pm, the Lady Eagles and Lady Knights collide. In the other boys division match, Agape 2 will try to end its losing skid when it challenges Kagman at the Ayuyus turf.
