SSC to hold two ocean swim races
Saipan Swim Club will be hosting two open water swim races next month.
First up is the 2019 Saipan Ocean Swim on March 23 and it will take place near the waters off Naked Fish in Susupe. Next month’s Saipan Ocean Swim is the 40th edition of the race and since it’s a special one, SSC is working on a commemorative event program and would want the input of former swimmers of the club.
“Calling all SSC alumni! We are spread worldwide, but let’s unite for the 40th Saipan Ocean Swim. SSC is working on a commemorative event program and we would like to hear from all of you,” SSC coach Jacoby Winkfield said.
Former SSC swimmers are requested to provide the following information or materials: name; year you swam for SSC; present location: favorite SSC memories; and pictures (now and then). Information must be send to saipanswimclub@gmail.com with the alumni in the subject line and should be turned in by March 5.
“There is no way that we will be able to contact everyone, so please tag away and let’s remember SSC well,” Winkfield said.
The club usually holds the Saipan Ocean Swim after the SSC International Invitational Meet, which was scrapped this year due to the closure of the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool. SSC swimmers are still training despite the shutdown of the facility in preparations for a couple of off-island competitions this year. Winkfield’s swimmers will be racing in the Inaugural Micronesian Swimming Championships in Palau, 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa, and 2019 World Swimming Championships in South Korea.
The Saipan Ocean Swim is a good warm-up for Tagaman Triathlon, as the former will take place a week before the triathlon event kicks off (March 30). Then for the post-Tagaman swim, SSC will be hosting the 16th Escape from Managaha on March 31. (Saipan Tribune)
