TETRIS tents disassembled to get ready for typhoon
The Saipan Mayor’s Office started disassembling temporary tents yesterday in anticipation of Typhoon Wutip, which is projected to pass by the Marianas this weekend.
“We started [yesterday] afternoon in the Koblerville area,” said Saipan Mayor’s Office director of field operations Joann Aquino.
According to Aquino, the Temporary Emergency Tent and Roofing Installation Support program of the CNMI government, or TETRIS, contacted their office to assist with Typhoon Wutip preparations, specifically the disassembly of TETRIS tents starting in the Koblerbille area.
Aquino added that the TETRIS program staff would be calling those who availed of the program to ask if they wish to have their temporary tents disassembled in anticipation of Typhoon Wutip.
“Residents [interested] in having their tents disassembled need to coordinate with TETRIS as well,” Aquino said.
Although those under the program are being called one by one, Aquino noted that her five teams went door to door at about 1:30pm to 2pm to ask people if they want their tents disassembled.
“The tents need to be clear of all their personal property before we can [disassemble] them,” she said.
Aquino did not specify the other areas on Saipan that are targeted for the disassembly of tents, but she noted that her office is coordinating with TETRIS and goes where there is a need for additional manpower.
As of 5pm yesterday, the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam noted that Typhoon Wutip continues to move west-northwest at 16 mph through Chuuk. At the time of publication, Wutip had maximum wind speeds of 75 mph, with Guam just inside the tropical storm force wind range.
As of 5pm yesterday, Typhoon Wutip was 550 miles southeast of Guam, 185 miles west-southwest of Chuuk, and 615 south-southeast of Saipan.
