The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands has donated $1,000 to the Man’amko Center of the Office on Aging in Garapan in lieu of the association’s annual luncheon for the elderly.
According to HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh, HANMI decided to reserve $1,000 for the man’amko in place of their annual Thanksgiving meals that they host for the elderly.
“We try to reserve $1,000 so we can do a donation to the Man’amko Center. We used to do the feedings for Thanksgiving and there were so many organizations that jumped on board and were doing Thanksgiving meals for the man’amko. So, we decided this year that we would just give them money and let them decide because they have so many other expenses like their bingo and other kinds of activities that they do, so it’s just extra money they can use to buy prizes and things they need so we reserved the money for them,” she said.
Cavanagh said it’s HANMI’s way of showing gratitude to the elderly who paved the way and made the CNMI what it is today.
“It’s just to thank our man’amko. They make sure we’re grounded, that we remember why we’re all doing this, family values, and they are a big part of where we are today so this is just a ‘thank you,’” she said.
Cavanagh said that HANMI will be donating more to other groups following the donation to the Man’amko Center.
“Our golf tournament will be in a few months. The date isn’t set yet but as we get closer to that date, we will also do donations to other places,” she said.
