CEC certifies candidacies of 4 in special polls
The Commonwealth Election Commission board of directors has certified the candidacies of four individuals who are running for a vacant Precinct 3 seat in the House of the Representatives.
CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol disclosed yesterday that the board approved in a meeting last Tuesday the nominating petitions and candidacy documents of former representative Donald Cabrera Barcinas, Marco Taisakan Peter, David Castro Sablan, and Mariano DLG Fajardo.
The special election would be held on March 23.
Igitol said the board also approved the ballot layout and authorized the commission to proceed with the printing of ballots.
CEC board chair Jesus I. Sablan presided over the meeting. Also present at the meeting were directors Joseph E. Santos, Vicente T. King, Leilani I. Manglona, Henry Emery Kaipat, and Esther A. Yatar.
Igitol said all four candidates showed up at CEC last Saturday for the drawing of their numbers in the ballots.
Fajardo, an independent candidate, will be No. 1 on the ballot. Sablan, also an independent candidate, got No. 2. Peter, of the Republican Party, pulled No. 3, while Barcinas, of the Democratic Party, picked No. 4.
The special election will be held on March 23 to fill the vacant seat left behind by representative-elect Francisco D. Dela Cruz, who died last Jan. 6.
Dela Cruz landed fifth in the November 2018 election. Rep. Edmund Villagomez, an independent, obtained the highest number of votes.
Barcinas landed in seventh place in his re-election bid. He was 97 votes behind sixth placer, Rep. Jose Ilo Itibus (R-Saipan).
