311 parents, 177 kids served in parenting classes last fiscal year
A total of 311 parents and 177 children were served in parenting classes in fiscal year 2018, according to Parents Anonymous Inc. Groups and Children’s Programs under the Division of Youth Services.
This program, which gives parents leadership skills at home and equips them with parenting resources, was the highlight in yesterday’s proclamation signing across the Tanapag Middle School, with Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios declaring February as the 2019 CNMI Parent Leadership Month.
Th DYS program is led by DYS administrator Vivian Sablan.
According to Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Robert Hunter, a lot of society’s ills are rooted in a skewed home environment.
“There is this whole array of societal educational issues that we deal with such as loss of language, educational outcomes, and their health and well-being,” Hunter said. “…But really, a lot of these issues are rooted in a singular issue, [which is] parenting or what is happening at the home.”
This is why recognizing parent leadership is important, he added.
In an interview, Palacios noted that good parental leadership at home can only lead to a better and stronger community.
“Being a parent is a 24/7 job, but a stronger community starts from strong parenthood and a strong family, so it is very important that we continue to insist on ourselves as parents to listen to our children because we can only be better if we raise our children in a better…emotional environment, physical environment, and temporal environment,” he said.
“It is very important for us to continue these engagements with our families and parents,” he added.
The CNMI Parents Anonymous Inc. would be holding a roadside waving this afternoon from 4:30pm to 5:30pm at the Atkins Kroll intersection along Beach Road.
