Daisy Demapan at the Office of the Governor’s press secretary’s office, has been selected to receive a Career Development Grant of $12,000 from the American Association of University Women for the 2018-2019 fellowship and grant year.
That makes Demapan one of 245 awardees for the 2018–19 award year. This group of recipients will pursue academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls.
The 2018–19 award year kicked off on July 1, 2018. The award funding totals $3.8 million.
AAUW is a non-profit organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.
AAUW board chair Julia T. Brown Esquire congratulated Demapan for joining the ranks of more than 12,000 women who have already received AAUW fellowships and grants.
“Much of my life has been centered around healing. I come from a family of educators and health professionals and my great-grandmother was a traditional healer. Although I did not start out my career in healthcare, I have always been involved in some capacity whether it was through social work or advocacy. There are many unmet needs in my community, especially in terms of mental healthcare in our indigenous population. I sincerely thank AAUW for the opportunity and allowing for graduate study through a program that offers flexibility and innovation to meet my goal of becoming a licensed clinical psychologist in the future. As a woman, I am also encouraged to pursue my passion to level the playing field which often neglects the needs of women, girls and especially indigenous minorities. I encourage current college graduates in the Marianas to seek higher learning and take advantage of the opportunities provided by the AAUW,” Demapan said.
Founded in 1881, AAUW is one of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women. These awards are highly competitive and selective. (PR)
