Last day for Yutu debris pickup
The Saipan Mayor’s Office confirmed over the weekend that their last day for Super Typhoon Yutu debris pickup would be next Sunday, Feb. 10.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Saipan Mayor’s Office previously agreed to extend up to Feb. 10, 2019, or next Sunday, the final day for picking up Super Typhoon Yutu debris. Beyond that date, according to an official from the mayor’s office, Super Typhoon Yutu debris pickup will the responsibility of the homeowner.
According to a flyer from the Saipan Mayor’s Office, in order to have debris picked up by the mayor’s office, it must be moved to the roadside. The types of debris eligible for pickup include vegetation debris such as plants, trees, logs, and leaves; construction debris such as lumber, drywall, plywood, concrete, plumbing, carpets, furniture, broken windows, and mattresses; and tin and metal debris such as tin roofing, or metal roofing in general.
Each pile must be segregated for it to be picked up.
“[We are working through the weekend] because the deadline is coming up and we want to maximize the rental of heavy equipment,” said Saipan Mayor’s Office director of field operations Joann Aquino in an interview with Saipan Tribune.
Aquino further noted that the office had already collected over 99,000 cubic yards of debris since the start of the cleanup effort for Super Typhoon Yutu debris.
To put that into perspective, the Saipan Mayor’s Office dump truck has a capacity of one cubic yard.
“That is what I report to FEMA,” noted Aquino, adding that she documents the daily loads, including the type of debris and its location. She further noted that the 99,000 cubic yards is debris specifically picked up by the Saipan Mayor’s Office alone.
“There are more still out there because there [still some] people pulling out more from their properties,” she said.
