Savita Sikkel, Irin Chung, Sam Ryu, and David Kwon clinched finals tickets in the singles events in the Saipan International School Student Council Tennis Tournament last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts.

Sikkel and Chung advanced to the title match of the girls U12 singles after posting similar victories. Chung moved to the finals first after demolishing Anna Kwon in their morning match, 4-0, 4-0. Sikkel, on the other hand, notched a pair of wins last weekend to secure the second finals slot. She first eliminated Hoo Wang and then crushed Dana Lee, 4-0, 4-0, to set up a championship showdown against Chung this Sunday at 8am.

David Kwon, a 4-0, 4-1 winner over Andrew Chung in the quarterfinals, will also see action in a title game this Sunday following a 4-1, 0-4, 5-0 triumph over Anthony Gregoire in the first semis game in the boys U14 singles. Kwon’s finals foe will be the winner in this Saturday’s second semis match between Daniel Kang and Jun Wang. Kang eased his way to the semis after ousting Daniel Nam 4-1, 4-0, while Wang also cruised to the Final Four after taking a 4-1 win in the first set and Danny Lee forfeited the second.

Meanwhile, Ryu bagged the first finals berth in the boys U18 singles. The top-ranked player drew a bye in the first round and got a free ride to the semis after Clayton Izuka forfeited their quarterfinal duel. Izuka earlier edged Daniel Heo, 4-3, 3-4, 5-3 to challenge Ryu for the semis slot in the division. Ryu went on to play his first game in the age group and needed only two sets to beat Andy Kim, 4-2, 4-1. Kim also got a bye in the first round and marched into the semis after whipping Min Cho, 4-0, 4-0, in their upper half draw game.

At the bottom half, Tony Kim and Kang will dispute the remaining finals ticket. Tim entered the semifinals after downing Isaac Heo, 4-1, 4-1, while Kang followed suit after ousting A.J. Hudkins, 4-2, 4-1. Before bowing to Kang, Hudkins won over Jaehoon Son, 4-2, 4-0.

Kim and Kang are forced to play in the semis this Saturday, as their match and other games last Sunday were rescheduled due to rain. Also reset for this weekend is the mini tennis tournament.
