Kapileo pleads guilty to committing homicide
A habitual offender involved in a fatal car accident pleaded guilty to allegations made against him, including homicide by vehicle.
David Desebel Kapileo, 50, entered a plea of guilty in front of Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho yesterday.
Kapileo pleaded guilty to count one, homicide by vehicle, and count two, reckless driving. The allegations made against him are punishable between 90 days to 10 years and six months in prison.
Kapileo is scheduled for a sentencing on March 13 at 9am.
Kapileo was represented by the assistant public defender Jean Pierre Nogues and the government was represented by assistant attorney general Robert Glass.
During the change of plea hearing yesterday, Kapileo admitted that he was so intoxicated on the day the incident happened that he does not even remember what exactly happened.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, Kapileo was arrested for hitting a 38-year-old Chinese male with a sports utility vehicle at the intersection of Chalan Pale Arnold Road and As Mahetog near the Saipan Ice and Water Co. on April 1, 2018.
The victim was pronounced dead at the Commonwealth Health Center that same day at 9:45pm.
Police said that according to a witness, after the SUV hit the victim, the driver kept driving south, then reportedly made a left turn on Mihaville in Garapan. Police found the SUV seven hours later.
Police arrested Kapileo last May 28, 2018. He currently remains detained at the Department of Corrections for failing to post a $100,000 cash bond.
Kapileo is a habitual offender and has been arrested several times since being released on a murder conviction.
Kapileo fatally shot his mother with a gun at their house in Garapan in December 1992, according to court records.
