McDonald’s Saipan donated $30,000 to the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter for Super Typhoon Yutu relief efforts last Tuesday at the Governor’s Office on Capitol Hill.

The donation was led by local McDonald’s franchisee general manager Marcia Ayuyu with Gov. Ralph DLG Torres in attendance.

“With the recovery that we have ongoing I’d like to thank all the partners we’ve had in the past and everybody that continued to contribute,” said Torres.

Yutu ravaged both Saipan and Tinian in late October 2018.

“It’s the mission of the American Red Cross that [makes us] go back to them and donating to them,” said McDonald’s Saipan Middle Road manager Joe Ayuyu Jr., adding that he expects Super Typhoon Yutu to be a typhoon that would go down in history as one of the worst that hit the CNMI.

“[American Red Cross NMI Chapter is] an established organization that has been around for many years and they have always been into helping the community with disasters and just anything that the community needs—they are one of the first responders,” he continued.

ARC-NMI Chapter executive director John Hirsh said in an interview that the donation is what “empowers” the organization to fulfill its duty on Saipan.

“Right after the devastation of Super Typhoon Yutu, the Red Cross mobilized its volunteers and all its resources to provide emergency assistance to families who are most vulnerable and in the most need,” he said.

He added that the humanitarian organization provided assistance that included giving emergency supplies and even monetary distributions.

In a previous interview with Saipan Tribune, Hirsh noted that the organization expended about $5 million in emergency response efforts providing food, water, and emergency supplies among others.
