The Governor’s Office over the weekend confirmed that it successfully selected a Tinian representative for the 16th CNMI Board of Education.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres selected Tinian’s Philip Mendiola-Long to fill the final seat of the 16th BOE after former Tinian representative Florine Hofschneider decided not to seek reelection during the 2018 elections.

“I appointed Mendiola-Long [to the BOE as Tinian representative],” he said in an interview. Torres further noted that Mendiola-Long’s appointment did not need the blessing of the Senate, citing consultations from both Attorney General Edward Manibusan and the BOE.

Saipan Tribune learned yesterday that Mendiola-Long’s swearing-in ceremony would be conducted tomorrow at the BOE conference of building 1241 on Capitol Hill. The 16th BOE chairwoman is currently Janice Tenorio.

Hofschneider told Saipan Tribune in a previous interview that she decided not to seek reelection for the 16th BOE due to personal reasons.

“I was hoping that other parents will come in and throw their names in the ring because they have children in schools and it is very important for them to participate, but it didn’t happen,” she previously told Saipan Tribune.

“My reason [for not seeking re-election] is personal. [I have a] family that I need to take care of,” she added. “It’s just a part of our lives where some priorities shift and I really have confidence that people in the community will step up, but it is unfortunate that it did not happen.”
