Cultural preservation efforts in action
DEDEDO, Guam—An archaeological monitor working at the future site of Marine Corps Base Guam encountered a relatively dense scatter of prehistoric and late 19th century artifacts consisting of volcanic rock tools and pottery fragments, during construction work on Jan. 21, 2019 (Federal holiday).
Immediately upon discovery, all work was halted at the site, and the area was appropriately cordoned off.
A Marine Corps Activity Guam archaeologist visited the site on Jan.22, 2019 and concurred with the contract archaeologist that the material observed suggests that this was a resource processing area. Archaeological investigations will be completed before construction can resume in the area.
“The response to the discovery is an ongoing process of meeting requirements under the 2011 Programmatic Agreement (PA),” said Ronnie Rogers, an archaeologist with MCAG. “Our monitor at the site is to be commended for his vigilance. The discovery was quickly marked off with a barrier and work in the historic site is paused until we complete consultations with the SHPO and ACHP. The information we gain from the proposed archaeological study will add to our knowledge of Guam’s history.”
MCAG has notified the Guam State Historic Preservation Office and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation on the discovery and have solicited agency comments on its proposed mitigation action.
