CCLHS competition slated
The Chamorro and Carolinian Language and Heritage Studies cultural performance arts competition is scheduled for next month in Garapan.
CCLHS program manager for the Public School System Jonas Barcinas Wednesday noted that the 2nd Annual CCLHS cultural performance arts competition is slated for mid-February 2019 at the Garapan Elementary School.
Specifically, the competition would be held on Feb. 15, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at GES and continues the next day from 8am to 4pm at the same campus.
“There are just nine categories [for the competition],” Barcinas said in an interview. He further noted that the categories did not change since the last competition last year.
The competition included categories to compete in such as the essay competition, poster competition, choral reading competition, the children’s choir competition, a solo male and female competition, singing competition, contemporary dance competition, and traditional dancing competition.
He noted that about 520 participants all throughout the categories last year, consisting of elementary, middle school, and high school students from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
Barcinas previously told Saipan Tribune that the completion was created to entice students from across the CNMI to embrace their Chamorro and Carolinian languages and heritage through songs, dances, poetry, and other forms of art.
“We hope that through this competition, it would help promote and preserve the indigenous heritage and cultural heritage of the Chamorro and Carolinian,” he said, including other island cultures throughout the CNMI.
Compared to last year, Barcinas noted that he isn’t expecting as much participants as last year because of the recent Super Typhoon Yutu.
“A lot of the schools are still struggling and we don’t want to overwhelm them, so we highly encourage them try their best to participate in certain categories…but don’t overwhelm the [students],” he said.
“We will do our very best to make sure the students represent their schools to the best of their ability and to enjoy and have fun,” he continued.
