Northern Mariana Islands Football Association’s Ruselle Zapanta, Jersh Angeles, and Irish Pagarao are back in Guam for the second part of the Asian Football Confederation B Coaching Certificate Course.
The three coaches left Saipan last Friday morning for the final phase of the course that will run until Jan. 25 at the Guam Football Association National Training Center in Dededo. They attended and completed the first part of the course last August under the same AFC instructor, Yusuke Adachi of Japan, and his assistant Kazunori Ohara.
“We will be taking all the written exams and will undergo the third and last practical assessment,” said Angeles before he left the island for the eight-day event. We need to pass all the tests to get the AFC B certificate.
Angeles, Zapanta, and Pagarao are among the nearly 20 coaches taking part in the course, which also had GFA’s Mark Chargualaf and Ross Awa as guest speakers last weekend. Chargualaf is an AFC B coach, getting his certificate last year, while Awa is one of the licensed goalkeeper coaches in Guam.
Chargualaf, according to GFA, discussed “Energy Systems” during the opening day of the course and later facilitated the stretches and warm-up exercises at the GFA pitch. He also conducted small-sided games for conditioning. As for Awa, he was in charge of the goalkeeping session, demonstrating techniques and skills covering the toughest position at the pitch and answering questions from the participants.
After the back-to-back sessions at the pitch, the three NMIFA coaches and their Guam counterparts will spend the remainder of the course in a classroom setting.
Zapanta, Pagarao, and Angeles’ certification course is timely, as the CNMI national teams prepares for several off-island tournaments this year. Angeles has been with the CNMI men’s and boys national squads for the past several years, assisting head coach and NMIFA technical director Michiteru Mita. Zapanta also worked with a couple of CNMI youth teams and played for the Blue Ayuyus once, while Pagarao is with the Commonwealth’s women’s national pool.
