Guam, federal officials join efforts to recover whale
SANTA RITA, Guam—Guam and federal environmental and wildlife officials joined efforts after finding a whale on the reef flats off the waters of Agat Jan. 17.
At 7am, the Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) responded to a whale located on the reef flat in the waters off of Agat Cemetery. The team was able to push the 11-foot, 1,000-lb beaked whale back into the ocean. However, an hour later, the whale was spotted again. This time on the reef flat off of Dadi Beach on U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG).
Teams from multiple local and federal offices responded including DAWR; Department of Agriculture conversation officers; NBG Environmental, Dive Locker and Security; Army veterinarians; and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
After the whale was washed up again on Dadi Beach, the whale was recovered and brought to DAWR office for a necropsy and further examination.
The public is reminded that if you spot a beached whale—do not approach it. Contact enforcement authorities including DAWR at 735-0281/0294 or the Guam Police. (PR)
