CEC awaits OAG opinion to hold special election or not
The Commonwealth Election Commission is awaiting opinion from the Office of the Attorney General whether there will be a special election or not as to who will replace Rep. Francisco S. Dela Cruz (R-Saipan) who suddenly passed away Sunday.
CEC executive director Julita Villagomez said yesterday that their legal counsel, chief solicitor Charles Brasington, told her that the OAG is trying to consult with Gov. Ralph DLG Torres about the government’s decision whether to hold special election or not.
Villagomez said the OAG may have an answer about the matter today, Tuesday.
Villagomez refused to comment further.
Dela Cruz, 56, died while he was on Tinian possibly due to heart attack. His wife is from Tinian, Saipan Tribune learned.
Torres ordered all flags in the CNMI to be flown at half-staff at all government and public buildings until sunset on the day of Dela Cruz’s burial.
Dela Cruz served from the 15th to 18th Legislatures. He was the vice speaker under the leadership of former House Speaker Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero (R-Saipan). He was a member of the 20th Legislature and won his re-election bid last Nov. 13, finishing fifth among 12 candidates for the six seats of Precinct 3.
