CNMI Scholarship administrator Jackie Che told Saipan Tribune yesterday that full review is ongoing on all the applicants for the spring 2012 semester. A total of 1,692 applications have been deemed renewable.

Until the entire review process is completed, Che said her office cannot confirm any approvals.

She disclosed that there are 1,150 unduplicated applications, of which close to 250 have complete supporting documents already.

So far, close to 20 applications have been denied, mostly for going over the maximum 12 non-degree units allowed during the entire academic career of the student.

Che couldn’t say how many applicants will be approved this semester because it is dependent on whether the students meet the criteria and award conditions listed in the rules and regulations governing the scholarship program.

She also disclosed that her office will be working within the $405,000 budget for the spring 2012 term.

The NMI Scholarship Office is budgeted for $2 million this fiscal year. Of that amount, $1.1 million will go to NMC scholars-both Honors and EAP-while the remaining balance will pay for the financial assistance of off-island scholars.

This spring semester’s number of new and renewal applications is slightly higher compared to the 1,558 applications submitted for the spring 2011 semester.
