Apatang: Yutu cleanup about 80 pct. complete

Cleanup and debris removal on Saipan following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yutu last October is about 70 to 80 percent complete, according to Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang.
Citing estimates of the Federal Emergency Management Agency during a recent windshield observation on Saipan, Apatang said: “We are getting there.”
Apatang was given a deadline of until Jan. 15, 201,9 to pick up Yutu-related debris.
“That is why we are working very hard to meet that deadline,” Apatang said. “Hopefully we could pick up as much [debris] as we could in that time.”
As of yesterday, the Saipan mayor noted that they were still in the southern area of Saipan, which bore most of the brunt of Super Typhoon Yutu. The cleanup teams were finishing up San Antonio and Afetnas yesterday and are heading to As Lito up to the Northern Marianas College area.
“From [NMC], we would have to come back down and comb the areas of Oleai,” he said. Apatang noted that the Oleai area is about 65 percent cleaned up.
“We need to go back because some more stuff are being thrown out, so we need to go pick those up and that’s it,” he said.
Following Oleai, he said his team would be going through the Susupe area through Chalan Kanoa for the third time while mixed debris are moved to the As Gonno staging area.
The mayor told Saipan Tribune that the Department of Public Works has been assisting with the cleanup in Koblerville , along with assistance from Church of Latter-day Saints volunteers, Marianas Young Professionals, and the Department of Corrections.
