The Commonwealth Ports Authority board of directors approved yesterday CPA’s proposed agreement with Skymark Airlines Inc. for the company’s three-year lease of an office space at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

At the same CPA board meeting, the CPA board adopted a resolution welcoming to the CNMI Skymark Airlines, which will be the first Japan-based carrier to conduct air services in the CNMI since 2005.

Skymark had asked to lease office space at the airport as it prepares to launch flights between Japan and Saipan.

According to the lease agreement, the company will lease 1,226 square feet of floor area on the mezzanine floor of the airport’s terminal building for a monthly rent of $1,826. The space was previously occupied by Delta Air Lines.

Newly-elected CPA board chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds said they are excited to welcome Skymark as this is an air bridge from the CNMI to Japan.

King-Hinds said everybody in the CNMI, including the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Governor’s Office, and CPA are working hard to ensure that they promote and grow and reclaim the Japan market.

King-Hinds said Skymark wants to hit the ground running, although they are not going to be operational for a couple of months down the line.

“It’s exciting to be able to welcome them,” she said, adding that the board also approved the resolution, welcoming them to the CNMI.

According to the CPA resolution, new direct air services between Japan and the CNMI will aid in the revival of the Japanese tourist market and subsequently benefit the people of the CNMI.
