Top athletes and officials selection at NMSA meeting
Northern Marianas Sports Association’s first monthly meeting for 2019 will be a busy one, as selection of top athletes of the month and other major awardees will be made on Jan. 3.
NMSA canceled its November and December meetings, as the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room, which is hosting the group’s regular meeting, does not have power yet (due to Super Typhoon Yutu). With the cancelations, NMSA misses picking the student-athletes and male and female athletes of the month (for October, November, and December). Nominations for these monthly plums must be made in writing.
After the monthly winners are named, local sports federations will be allowed to nominate teams and individuals for the following awards: Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year (2018), Male and Female Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and Administrator of the Year. NMSA is also expected to consider nominations for the CNMI Sports Hall of Fame.
All the monthly awardees for 2018 are automatically nominated for the top athletes awards, but local sports federations can still nominate individuals who were not on the winners list.
Weightlifting’s Angel San Nicolas and athletics’ Zarinae Sapong led the 2017 honor roll, getting the Male and Female Athletes of the Year award, while tennis earned four recognitions with Jimin Woo and Carol Lee taking the NMSA/Tan Siu Lin Foundation Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year plums, Jeff Race winning the Coach of the Year trophy, and the CNMI Junior National Team bagging the Team of the Year award. Northern Mariana Islands Football Association’s Vickie Izuka completed the roster of winners after bringing home the Administrator of the Year trophy.
