SCS’ roving ukulele concert
The Saipan Community School’s ukulele players have been going around in Susupe, spreading “Christmas cheer” in the form of free ukulele concerts in establishments in their area.
School principal Amanda Dunn brought her 43 middle school students from their campus in Chalan Kanoa to the Joeten Kiyu Public Library last Thursday to play their whole ukulele set, which consists of six songs in total, including two duos.
“We wanted to display the [student’s] talents that they have been working on and the skills that they have built. [We also] just want to [spread] the Christmas cheer,” Dunn said.
According to Dunn, the school’s 6th to 8th grades usually do their Christmas ukulele concert at the Saipan Aging Office in Garapan. However, she noted, the center is currently being used as a shelter for Super Typhoon Yutu victims.
Dunn said they have been able to play some songs at the Kanoa Resort, Saipan World Resort, Pacific Insurance, and even Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan’s (Ind-MP) office. The group later headed to Joeten Susupe.
“The JKPL is highly appreciative of all its community partners, especially the SCS, a nearby private school,” said JKPL technical services librarian Beth Demapan.
She noted that it was the library that invited the school.
“It promotes both music and literacy, so it was one of our missions. I just thank them for coming out here,” she said.
