$20.1M from FEMA for PSS, NMC, CUC, CNMI Judiciary
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres announced yesterday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has obligated $20.1 million for classroom structures for the Public School System and the Northern Marianas College, island power restoration, and a generator for the CNMI Judiciary at 100-percent federal share.
The project worksheets include $4.5 million to PSS for 42 classroom structures, $2.3 million to NMC for 22 structures, $13.4 million in power restoration, and $151,000 to the CNMI Judiciary for generator use.
“These were all critical priorities that we requested from FEMA in order to address several key areas,” Torres said.
“We wanted to give our students, teachers, and staff at PSS and NMC strong temporary classroom facilities while we rebuild their schools and campuses, and we wanted to make sure that our Judiciary can return to normal operations as much as possible to accommodate their caseload. And, of course, island power restoration was at the very top of the list, as we work with CUC, the Army Corps of Engineers, and our utility partners from Guam, Colorado, and Micronesia. We are really pushing on several requests to address key areas of the recovery. It has been progressing really well, and I thank FEMA, our federal and military partners, and our local first responders for working daily to achieve a sense of normalcy again.”
Virginia Villagomez, the governor’s authorized representative, said the project worksheets are just the first of many to come as we move forward in the recovery.
