Trial of ex-resort staff accused of rape begins
The jury trial of Bradley Demapan, a former resort employee accused of raping a female tourist, began yesterday in the Superior Court.
When Saipan Tribune left the courtroom late afternoon yesterday, a tour guide had just started his testimony for the CNMI government.
A Korean woman, the companion of the alleged victim, was the government’s first witness.
Assistant attorneys general Barbara Cepeda and Heather Barcinas are prosecuting the case. Attorney Steven Pixley is counsel for Demapan.
Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho is presiding over the trial.
The Office of the Attorney General charged the 27-year-old Demapan with sexual assault in the first degree, sexual assault in the second degree, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.
Bradley is being kept on a $100,000 cash bail. He has been in detention since his arrest in July 2013.
A police detective stated in her report that two Korean female tourists, including the 27-year-old alleged victim, had been drinking at the Buoy Bar, which is within the resort compound, on July 25, 2013, when a PIC clubmate and his co-worker, Demapan, showed up and joined them at 10:30pm.
At 1am, one of the tourists left the group to use the restroom. When she returned, her companion and the two hotel employees were no longer at the bar. The tourist got worried and immediately sought the help of the hotel’s security personnel.
At 2am, July 26, the security guard and a tour agent heard screams and found the alleged victim and Demapan in the bushes north of PIC. The alleged victim was wearing only a bra and was crying. Demapan was allegedly seen pulling up his pants.
The victim told police that Demapan raped her. He denied the charges.
