Tinian and Rota got over $800K DNAP
Both Tinian and Rota were able to avail of over $800,000 in Disaster Nutritional Assistance Program and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance for back-to-back typhoons that devastated the islands and its residents.
According to Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Robert Hunter, the department was able to hand out $451,943 in DNAP assistance and $16,090 in supplemental nutritional assistance in response to Typhoon Mangkhut, while the department was able to hand out $342,397 in DNAP assistance and $16,513 in supplemental nutritional assistance in response to Typhoon Yutu.
“They both went really smoothly,” said Hunter. He noted that Tinian was prioritized for Super Typhoon Yutu because it was hit harder.
“…Unfortunately for Saipan distributions, it is a much larger population and it is a much more [supervised] process here; it includes more federal involvement,” he said.
He noted that for Rota, all went well for Typhoon Mangkhut disaster nutritional assistance response except for the fact that their nine staff was stranded due to Typhoon Yutu at the time.
“It all went well and we were able to put out [close to a million for both islands],” Hunter noted.
As of Wednesday, 3pm, Saipan Tribune learned that DNAP numbers for Saipan were already at 17,374.
DNAP assistance processing has yet to conclude for Saipan; however they have been processing a quota of at least 1,000 daily since Monday, while Hunter previously noted that over 2,000 DNAP applications were processed the day prior.
