Call for 2019 Pacific leaders conference
Applications are now being accepted for emerging youth leaders in the U.S. territories in the Pacific, Hawaii, and the Freely Associated States who want to join the 2019 Young Pacific Leaders Conference.
The U.S. territories in the Pacific are American Samoa, Guam, and the CNMI, while FAS are the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
U.S. Department of the Interior assistant secretary for Insular and International Affairs Doug Domenech is encouraging youth leaders to take advantage of this opportunity.
Domenech said the Interior fully supports the 2019 conference, which is also sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
The conference will be held in Fiji in the first week of March next year, with virtual activities starting in February. YPL leaders’ activities is scheduled in May.
The deadline for the submission of applications is on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 12mn (New Zealand time). All participants are expected to be selected by Dec. 21, Friday.
This will be the sixth edition of the YPL, with Suva acting the hosts of the conference. Youth leaders in the Pacific, between 25 to 35 years old, would exchange knowledge and skills for the advancement of the region’s economy and close cooperation.
Culturalvistas.org said that information sessions, skills workshops, and site visits will be provided to all participants “to deepen [the] participants’ knowledge and abilities to address issues related to YPL’s four programmatic themes.”
The themes are education, environment and resource management, civic leadership; and economic and social development.
Organizers are expecting 42 applicants to be selected from Hawaii, the U.S. territories, FAS, and eligible Pacific states—Australia and New Zealand.
All participants would be eligible in competing for small grants at the end of the conference. The small grants could support projects for their communities.
