Nearly 1,000 lbs of Yutu trash collected in Garapan
An organization that collects trash in Garapan every month hauled off almost 1,000 lbs of trash from a small area in the Garapan tourist area last week.
The Saipan Awaodori Team, along with Kinpachi Restaurant staff, were able to collect 998 lbs of Typhoon Yutu trash that included green waste, white goods, and some e-waste during their monthly cleanup at the Paseo de Marianas.
“We couldn’t get the larger pieces of trash,” PDM Promoters, Inc. coordinator Sonia Siwa told Saipan Tribune. She noted that her small group of 23 Saipan Awaodori team members and nine Kinpachi Restaurant staff did some bush cutting in the area as well.
“We needed a trailer to gather the waste,” she said. “The trash we collected fit our two pickups.”
According to Siwa, the e-waste were left untouched, along with other pieces of debris that were too heavy to handle such as roofing tins, washing machines, cans, and more.
The group, which has been conducting monthly cleanups of the same route, has been consistently collecting at least 400 lbs of trash on a monthly basis.
Siwa noted that this month’s collection was the largest the group has collected this year.
