Former CNMI junior player Isabel Heras couldn’t have asked for a better way to highlight her rookie season in the collegiate ranks.
“It was my first time playing for Dixie State University in the fall and that made me quite nervous, but I am happy with my results for this season,” said Heras, who is on an athletics scholarship with the NCAA Division 2 school.
The DSU freshman had a 3-1 record in the fall season and helped the Trailblazers earn an undefeated record in the competition last month. The Trailblazers first eked out a 4-3 victory over Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction in Colorado and then eased past Colorado College, 8-1, to complete the fall season sweep.
“The girls and I trained hard before heading to Colorado and that helped us end the fall season undefeated. I got to experience my first college tennis competition against different school. It was an amazing experience that I enjoyed and will cherish forever,” Heras said.
Against Colorado College, the CNMI player was 2-0 (singles and doubles wins), while she had a split in the Trailblazers’ duel versus Colorado Mesa.
“The doubles matches I played were both very close and I just love the competition here,” the 18-year-old said.
Against Colorado Mesa, Heras and Yolena Carlon lost a nip-and-tuck game over Kristen Kirby and Emily Beckley, 6-8. Heras then returned to the court for the singles play and her victory over Rebecca Osterberg, 6-0, 6-7, 7-6, saved the day for Dixie State. Versus Colorado College, the Commonwealth bet showed no mercy in downing Gaby Jadotte, 6-0, 6-0, while in the doubles, Heras and Carlon labored through a 6-4 triumph over Adela Burak and Annie Zlevor.
Heras is proud to be part of the Trailblazers’ unbeaten season and hopes to continue her strong showing in her rookie season with DSU.
“Being part of this team is definitely a unique experience. We train together pushing each other every step of the way, even in 7am gym sessions,” Heras said.
“The new season will start in February. We are still waiting for our spring schedule, but we will be traveling to a few states for next year’s competitions,” she added.
