Over 1K Yutu victims get Red Cross cash aid
The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter was able to provide financial assistance to over 1,000 families that were affected by Super Typhoon Yutu and will continue to provide financial aid to needy families.
Red Cross executive director John Hirsch said that, so far, the chapter was able to provide financial assistance to 1,500 families.
“It’s going pretty well, we’ve given over 1,500 families individual financial assistance. These would be people with homes that were completely destroyed or had major damage to them, like their roof completely blew off,” he said.
The chapter has been distributing financial aid to needy families in the wake of Super Typhoon Yutu.
Eligible families were given $125 per individual living in the household.
Although the chapter prioritizes needy families in terms of financial assistance, the chapter is still handing out relief goods to those who sustained minor damage from Super Typhoon Yutu.
“If they sustained major damage like broken windows or had flooding in their house, then generally we’re not providing financial assistance to those families because we only have a certain amount of resources and we want to prioritize needy families,” said Hirsch.
“For those families, we’re providing tarps, hygiene kits, coloring books, and all kinds of other things, just not the financial assistance,” he added.
Saipan Tribune archives state that the assistance is given to families on Saipan and Tinian whose homes were either totally destroyed (two or more structural elements) or damaged (one structural element).
One structural element is a roof or a wall. To be considered structural damage, it must be collapsed rafters or wall studs and not just flooding and window or tin roof damage.
The Red Cross is currently stationed at the Marianas Business Plaza. On Tinian, they are currently stationed at the Tinian Community Gymnasium, which will be open daily from 9am to 5:30pm.
The head of household must bring an ID as proof of residency (official photo, lot number, phone or Commonwealth Utilities Corp. billing, or rental or lease agreement). Saipan residents must also bring photos of household damage.
