The island of Rota was upgraded to Tropical Storm Condition 2 yesterday due to the threat of Tropical Storm Man-Yi, which is still off the coast of Chuuk as of 2pm.

Tropical Storm Condition 2 means that damaging winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour are expected within 24 hours.

In a bulletin issued by the CNMI Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency, acting governor Victor B. Hocog upgraded Rota yesterday to Tropical Storm Condition 2 as Tropical Storm Man-Yi—previously named Tropical Storm 32W—continues to intensify.

Tropical Storm Man-Yi is expected to continue intensifying through Thursday, possibly becoming a typhoon as early as Thursday night.

Tropical Storm Man-Yi was last seen packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was seen moving west-northwest at 20 mph.

As of 2pm yesterday, Tropical Storm Man-Yi’s was still off western Chuuk and is expected to maintain its course and speed through Friday.

Man-Yi is currently about 565 miles southeast of Guam, about 580 miles southeast of Rota, and about 620 miles south-southeast of Saipan and Tinian.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 110 miles.

The CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point will be monitoring the movement of Tropical Storm Man-Yi and will be issuing bulletins as they become available.

The Rota community is encouraged to keep a close watch on updates to weather forecasts and to stay informed on the latest statements and advisories that will be available through local media.
