Carol in main draw of Grade A tournament

The CNMI’s Carol Lee joined the 64-player main draw in the singles event of the Mundial Juvenil Yucatan HSBC FMT in Mexico.
Lee is at the upper half of the field and was scheduled to face Elovina Kalieva of the U.S. yesterday at the Club Campestre de Yucatán Calle in Merida. Both are unranked players with Lee having the slight edge on her American foe, as far as the ITF Juniors rankings is concerned. The CNMI bet, as of Nov. 19, is ranked No. 178 and once ranked as high as 161 (March 2018). Kalieva is not far behind at No. 182 and has achieved her highest ranking at No. 180 (Nov. 12, 2018).
Though she is behind Lee in the rankings, Kalieva has a better singles record than the former this season. Kalieva has a 24-8 slate against Lee’s 20-9. Overall, Lee, holds an 89-38 career singles mark against the only 31-18 of her 15-year-old opponent. Kalieva owns 258 ranking points in singles versus Lee’s 235.
The American last played in the Evert American ITF in Boca Raton, Florida early this month and made it to the semifinals of the Grade 4 event before losing to compatriots Elaine Chervinsky. Lee, on the other hand, dropped her singles opener in last week’s Copa Mundial Campeche FMT and marched into the semis of the doubles event.
Meanwhile, Lee will also play in the doubles event of the Mundial Juvenil Yucatan HSBC FMT—a Grade A tournament.
She will team up with Egypt’s Hania Abouelsaad and they will face American Zoe Hitt and Canadian Alisia Stephanie Manolescu in the first round.
