Apatang on Camacho: No bad blood
With the unofficial results suggesting a landslide victory for incumbent Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang, he assured that there is no bad blood between him and political rival Ramon “RB” Camacho.
Apatang told Saipan Tribune yesterday that once the elections are over, there would be no more sour relations between the two.
Saipan Tribune’s unofficial tallies of the Saipan mayoral race in the 2018 elections point toward a commanding lead for the incumbent Saipan mayor over Camacho with 7,616 votes, a wide 5,165 difference against his lone rival, who garnered 2,451 votes.
The unofficial tallies did not include absentee votes but, based on the unofficial tallies, Apatang dominated Camacho in all five electoral districts. The incumbent mayor tripled Camacho’s votes on average, minus the absentee voters.
“There are no hard feelings here. The election season is over, the political issue is over. Let’s move forward together and work together for the betterment of our people here on Saipan,” he said, adding that whatever the outcome, he looks forward to working with Camacho.
“Thank you to all my supporters, all who believed in me and gave me another chance to work with the people of Saipan,” he said in an impromptu victory speech.
Apatang noted that one of his main goals is to finish a new animal shelter, using money from a local bill that Gov. Ralph DLG Torres had signed, appropriating about $180,000 to his office to supplement Federal Emergency Management Agency funding in the wake of Super Typhoon Yutu.
That’s in addition to the home-numbering system project and the street naming that’s assigned to Apatang’s office
“The governor and the Legislature gave us about $80,000 to start the home-numbering system project and the street naming,” he said. “Those are the two major things I am looking forward to finishing within the near future.”
