Carol debuts in Mexico
The CNMI’s Carol Lee will have her debut in Mexico today, as she competes in the Copa Mundial Campeche FMT in Campeche.
Lee is at the lower half of the main draw and unseeded in the Grade 1 event, which offers 280 points to the singles winner and 210 to the doubles champions. The 16-year-old will challenge Mexico’s Ingrid Carolina Millan in the opening round of the 64-player field. The Lee-Millan tiff at 11am (Mexico time) on Court 3 at the Campeche Country Club.
The Mexican is also unranked in the high-level competition. Milan is at No. 914 in the ITF Juniors world rankings and holds a 15-18 record in singles and 18-16 in doubles. This year, the 17-year-old has won four matches and lost five in singles and holds a 3-4 slate in doubles.
Lee, who is ranked No. 178, has a better overall record than Millan with the former having an 89-37 mark in singles and 54-36 in doubles. This season, the Commonwealth bet has registered 20 victories and eight losses in singles and 13 wins and eight defeats in doubles thus she is favored to prevail against her Mexican opponent.
The many-time NMSA/TSL Foundation Student Athlete of the Year awardee will also see action in the doubles event of the Copa Mundial FMT, but her teammate has yet to be determined as of press time last night.
The hard court tournament is just Lee’s first stop in Mexico. She will also play in the Mundial Juvenil Yucatan HSBC FMT that will be held at the Club Campestre de Yucatán Calle in Merida from Nov. 19 to 25.
