Tinian power and water energized, but offline
While power and water has been energized and are ready for distribution, Tinian, however, remains offline.
In a news briefing Monday afternoon, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres noted that Tinian’s power is up, but press secretary Kevin Bautista later clarified with Saipan Tribune that the laterals, which include the power poles that elevate the transformers, are not online.
“…[Tinian’s] power is up already and their water is up already. That is the beauty of Tinian; although they have incurred more disaster, we have one generator there that powered up the water source, so they are able to get their water,” said Torres on Monday, noting that Tinian to a certain extent is in a better position than Saipan.
In a Commonwealth Utilities Corp. status update yesterday, it said that all feeders on Tinian remain offline but station power in the CUC Tinian power plant is on from 6am to 6pm.
Bautista noted Monday that all power poles on the island is down due to Super Typhoon Yutu.
In its status update yesterday, CUC counted a total of 797 downed power poles, 105 transformers, and 294,240 linear feet of conductors on Tinian.
The power originating from the Tinian power plant could not be distributed without first running through power cables that then feed the electricity into the transformer, which “transforms” the voltage to a lesser wattage for safe consumption and is then distributed.
For water, CUC notes that islandwide water services also remain offline. However, the Marpo Valley Water Station remains open to the public for water from 1:30am to 5:30pm. The Maui II Pump Station remains operational and water is partially online in San Jose Village and partial areas in Marpo Valley, Carolina Heights, and partial areas in Marpo Heights 1 and 2.
CUC notes that a total of 16 water lines were repaired, four of which are main lines and the remaining are service laterals.
According to Torres, Tinian’s support is “up to par” to Saipan. “…They are taking care of their water situation and damages.”
