NC group airlifts Yutu aid for Saipan, Tinian
A North Carolina group is airlifting aid to Saipan and Tinian and the packets are expected to arrive at noon today.
The international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse would be deploying relief assistance and disaster response specialists to Saipan and then Tinian. The two islands were ravaged by Super Typhoon Yutu.
They are bringing with them 30 tons of emergency shelter materials, household water filtration units, solar lights, and medical supplies.
A portion of the relief items would be brought to Tinian through their DC-9 cargo aircraft, along with a mobile medical team to provide patient care and treatment
“Typhoon Yutu caused massive devastation on the islands of Saipan and Tinian. Hundreds of families are hurting—many of whom are now homeless and lack access to basic necessities like shelter and clean water,” said William “Franklin” Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. “We are coming alongside them to meet their immediate physical needs…”
A representative of Samaritan’s Purse told Saipan Tribune in an email yesterday that the organization do not usually rely on volunteers in response to disasters abroad. The disaster response specialists and medical personnel that will be deployed on Saipan and Tinian are all staff of the organization.
Graham, who is son of the late prominent evangelical Christian figure Billy Graham, heads Samaritan’s Purse as president.
