Tinian Mayor’s Office aids in debris removal

The Tinian Mayor’s Office is helping residents get rid of debris that littered their yard and property following the destruction of Super Typhoon Yutu last month.
Typhoon debris is one of the biggest concerns on the island right now, according to Municipal Operations Center public information officer Alexis Hofschneider Quan. She said staff from the Tinian Mayor’s Office would start collecting the debris from villages “so we can help everyone return their houses to its normal state as soon as we possibly can and ease the burden of the recovery.”
Hofschneider, who joined Tinian Mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas in a Facebook video, said the Tinian Mayor’s Office would start debris removal this week. “We will be sending out a team and they will be picking up the debris from your curb side and disposing of them for you…so you won’t have to worry about it.”
In turn, the help of residents is needed by having them assort the debris. “We need you to meet us halfway. In order to do so, everyone needs to sort their wastes into three categories: lumber and construction wood, tin roofing, and green waste.
Quan is also asking residents to place the sorted debris as far as toward the edge of their properties. “Toward the road in front of your house. We ask that you do this, so that we can pick up your debris without encroaching too far into your property.”
“Place it near the road as far as you can. Toward the road from your property, then our guys would come over and pick it up for you. So, you don’t have to worry about it,” she added.
Quan said that daily household trash could go to the municipal dump where residents can dispose of them since the Mayor’s Office staff won’t pick them up. “Everything else, we’re going to do the best that we can to help get rid of the debris for you.”
San Nicolas also reminded residents to remain patient. “I ask that we continue to respect each other and to be patient for one another as we recover from Super Typhoon Yutu.”
